9 a.m. Welcome (Kyle Karioka) and Tax Update (Trever Asam)
HGPC Education Chair Kyle Karioka will welcome everyone before Trever Asam presents his annual IRS Federal Tax Update to explain recent legislation and developments for tax-exempt and nonprofit organizations.
9:45 a.m. All the Other Assets (Kirk Ross) *CFRE credit 1 point
When discussing charitable giving opportunities, fundraisers and donors alike tend to focus on the donors’ ability to give from cash assets. But the fact is, cash assets are only a small portion of most donors’ overall wealth. So, when we fail to discuss giving from a donor’s non-cash assets, we miss opportunities to help our donors make their maximum philanthropic impact.
In this session, we will learn different ways donors can make higher impact gifts with non-cash assets. Focusing on these kinds of assets, including appreciated securities, closely-held business interests, real estate and retirement assets. we will discuss giving vehicles that increase the tax efficiency of these types of gifts.
11 a.m. Personalized Philanthropy to Foster Legacy Giving for All Seasons (Donna Bandelloni & Kirk Ross) *CFRE credit 1 point
Chief Development Officers, and other nonprofit leaders, are juggling many different priorities each and every day. For many, our passion is working with the donors to help facilitate gifts that will impact our organizations, but the reality is that it’s difficult to find time to nurture and grow these relationships. How can we carve out time to do what attracted us to philanthropy?
In this session, we will engage the audience in discussing how to prioritize building authentic personalized relationships with donors by sharing successful and unsuccessful approaches. With a real case study, we will explore how all fundraising professionals can embrace more personalized philanthropy that fosters legacy giving even when juggling many priorities.
You will learn how to focus, evaluate, and create an organized strategy, to either relaunch or create a legacy giving strategy. Identify best prospects for making legacy gifts, and the importance of engagement and stewardship to deepen relationships for gift readiness.
12 p.m. Lunch
12:45 p.m. The Gift Planning Conversation: Facilitating Meaningful Gifts (Donna Bandelloni) *CFRE credit 1 point
Gift Planning has never been more important to nonprofits or donors. In unprecedented times with the pandemic and the uncertainty of our economy, gift planning provides tools to help donors give more effectively and in a way that addresses both personal and charitable goals. This session will provide guidance as you define donor motivation by asking the right questions and listening carefully to identify the opportunities that represent the best options for your gift planning prospects.
Whether you are a full-time gift planning officer, major gift fundraiser, or new to gift planning, you will learn how to: 1) identify best prospects for gift planning conversations; 2) define the right questions for the right donors; 3) identify donor motivation and charitable goals; 4) create meaningful, personalized donor conversations; and 5) uncover the best charitable options for your donor. We will also discuss the importance of working with your donor’s most trusted advisors, which will benefit both you and your legacy donors.
2 p.m. Interactive Panel (Donna Bandelloni & Kirk Ross)
Our speakers will facilitate groups of conference attendees in an interactive session to apply principles shared throughout the day. We will conclude with a panel discussion, including members of the HGPC board to wrap up what we have learned.
